  • I came from some random Anet A8 upgrade file (the mosfet holder), and I noticed a website in the bottom corner and put it in the search bar. Lovely little corner you've carved out for yourself here, and wow, 1997, that's incredible, this is bordering on internet history right here, this place is older than me!

I gotta say, I love it here, and you know I have to thank you for making the files that are making my prints better and safer! Keep on keeping on, and auf wiedersehen, mein freund!

    Hello Autumn,

what a pleasant surprise to have a guest book entry after 8 years again!

I'm happy to read that you are enjoying the information found on my web site.

And speaking of old... I'm currently working on my "Computers" section and documenting the 486`s and Pentiums I had running at the time. I found my back-ups of Windows 95 from 1996 and onwards and am reliving the days from back then. Really cool stuff to read the emails e.g.

    All the best,

    Leo

  • Hi Leo, It turns out that I have the same collection of Estes catalogs as you. All but about 4 or 5 of my catalogs were mine originally. Maybe like you, I have nothing before 1966 because the price goes up exponentially. I also have Centuri catalogs from 1967(my first when I got into model rockets at age 11 so it's very special to me) through 1982 with the exception of '68 and '70. Thanks for the good work of listing your stuff. It's nice to know there's someone just like me out there.

  • Hi Leo..I'm a recent BAR (2nd time) and recognized US coinage expert. My website is a reference guide for US Liberty Seated 10C coinage. For about one year, I've been researching Estes model rocket kits in a manner similar to my research of US 10c coinage. I am trying to build a reference guide to OOP kits including variations in header/face cards for same kit number, rarity (availability) and pricing guide. As for pricing, I already have one full year's eBay sales information in a large database. Therefore I have a fundamental knowledge of rarity and pricing range. My plans in the next year are to add an Estes model rocket kit guide to the existing website at www.seateddimevarieties.com. I like the format of your site and may follow some of the approaches. BTW, I have about 300+ Estes kits at last count (and growing).

  • Hello,
I enjoyed the BMW part of your website very much. Nice pics from your cars, especially your CSL. Damn. I went to the exhaust movie part to see the different soundfiles. I wonder which system Dr. Nagano's M3 has. It's a Supersprint, but is it the road or race muffler? And is it only the end muffler or also centermuffler upgrades? I would be glad to know, because I'm looking for an upgrade for my muffler and this sound of Nagano is what I love.

Thanks at front and all the best with this website and your cars!

  • Hi Leo;

Just surfing and came across your site. I too have been in the hobby of Model Rocketry (off & on) since 1968. In the early 80's I managed to collect a number of rocket kits and I think I have about 150 now. One kit I never managed to get was the Centuri Little Joe II and as I understand it, you have two of them. Are you interested is selling one? Swapping? Please let me know, I'm not a vendor by any means, just interested in this particular model I never managed to buy (in the early 70's) when I should have.

    Cheers

It has a card in it that says you can send in the card for your teacher and estes will send your teacher a catalog and suggest ways to make science more fun. I was thinking you may know the year it is from. Thanks.

  • Hey Leo,

I just wanted to say thanks. I'm rmatt8748 @ e46 fanatics. I linked through the RS4 touring vs. M3 CSL video.

I'm a big fan of your site. Here in the US our cars are pretty different and we just look up to you guys over in europe. I'm in college right now, and I've done a fair amount of traveling in europe, but it was several years ago. When I was in Germany I was too young and my dad did all the driving. I speak French and Italian and hope to learn German one day and spend some time on the Nurburgring (many years from now)

I'm pretty lucky to own a 2001 carbon black 6MT m3. I love the car even though it has about 112,000 km's on it. It's my second car, my previous was a Lancer Evolution 8. The evo was faster, but I fell in love with the m3 when I drove one of my friend's m3's.

I'm kinda just rambling on, but cool stuff, I enjoyed your autobahn RS4 kill story and hope to know someday what its like to be able to go over 65mph (110km/h) legally.. the roads in the states are horrible.

Sure there are places to go faster and people do, but you always have to worry about police.. just annoying.

Well anyways, thanks for your site!

    -Matt

  • Saw your web address at the Estes Forum website and thought I'd drop by. WOW ... and I thought I had a lot of rocket models both finished and work-in-progress. You have one nice website!! I wondered if you had ever come across a model rocket, only sold there in Germany, of the Wasserfall(Peenemunde EMW-C2-W5 version). I checked but didn't see it listed anywhere in your extensive inventory so I thought I'd ask. I would like to get my hands on one just to see how they address the CP/CG issues the mid body fins introduce!
As a side note my wife and I visited your beautiful country in June 2005 so we could visit our 6 German host daughters and their families. We flew into Frankfurt am Main and traveled to the cities of Lübeck, Berlin, Potsdam, Stuttgart, Bonn, Cologne, Heidelberg, Gießen and Lord only knows how many other small villages before returning to Frankfurt and the flight home. Fell in love with everything except the pay toilets, no drinking fountains and no free refills!

  • Guys

Not to repeat what has gone before, but well done for devoting such a detailed personal content to the glorious E46 M3 SMG.

I have owned 4 BMWs in the UK, including an E36 M3 Saloon, and when i sold it I was devastated.

Now, in Dubai, where petrol is cheap and cars too, I pick up my 2003 M3 SMG in the morning, carbon black with red leather. I dont think I will be sleeping tonight.
Your site has helped me remember my earlier test drives (razzing it up and down through the gears, smiling from ear to ear) and it is the best site on the car that I have found.

My first trip tomorrow is a 300km roudn trip out of Dubai to the Omani border, where the roads are good and more importantly, empty.

As anyone that has bought this car will recall, the night before really is like Christmas eve when you were 6.

    Happy and safe driving everybody

  • Just wanted to let you know that I appreciate you taking the time to document your experience with the 2003 M3/SMG. I own one myself and absolutley just LOVE it, and always have a hard time explaining the transmission to people. Even after I explain it, they still think they know what I'm talking about but in all reality, until they drive one, they'll have no idea. It's just absolutley impressive and most exhilarating. It honestly took me some time before I actually felt comfortable with the SMG technology and completely understand the whole concept. As for the exhaust, I had a Borla exhasut installed and it sounds very similar to the Eisenmann on the M3 your drove.
Maximizing this vehicles performance has just been more than words can say. What can I say, I JUST LOVE IT. As you mentioned.... PURE ADRENELIN! Again, thanks for such a great write up, I am certain to share your story with all the people who just can't quite grasp the M3 SMG II concept and design.

  • I just ordered the same color combination. I've never seen the combo in person but I believe it'll look great. Do you feel the black w/cinnamon was a good choice for you? I really wanted the nav system, but not sure it's worth the $$$. Does the nav system really make a difference in the car? I went w/the 6speed vs. SMG. I drove a SMG and there was too much jerking around and did not really "feel" the car while driving. I'd like to hear your thoughts. Also, mine is a 06' but I believe there hasn't been too many changes through the production of the M3 E46.

Any thoughts/comments on the 525i? It has 113k miles looks to be VERY well maintained as it was a corporate car until 2 yrs ago. I've looked it over, under, and all around, squeaky clean. I took it on a 100 mile test drive (it was so much fun I could not stop and didn't encounter anything odd. I've heard good things about this particular model and was looking for other opinions on the brand/model.
Best of luck, and keep the shiny side up!

  • Hi Leo:

Well, first and foremost, let me congratulate you on that CSL. I have been going to your site regularly this past year or so (bascially since the day I purchased my M3 - a 2004 Coupe SMG Imola) and I was almost shocked when I saw you had sold your baby. I was really wondering what you would get next, and had almost anticipated a Carrera. But no, you are faithful to BMW-M and got the CSL. It looks awesome! I wonder how the seats feel, they look great. The CSL is not available here in the US, so all we can do it contemplate pictures...

When are you taking it to the ring? I can't wait to hear your report in comparison with the regular M3.

I took my baby to the track for the first time 2 weeks ago (Thunderhill raceway) and was amazed at the possibilities of this car on a track. It went way beyond what I had imagined and (I think) I was driving way below the limit.

I also wanted to congratulate you on your web site. This is the only serious website I found about M3s (ok, besides BMW's).

Take care and have fun with your new toy,
    Manuel

PS: oh, and since you're an SMG fan, I purchased those expensive Strassentech silver paddles a month ago and I strongly recommend them, they're much more accessible and feel very different than the stock ones (the click feels a lot more accurate). And ok, they look great too but that wasn't the point.

  • Contemplating an M3 SMG - your site is the best single source of data I have found to date. Well done.

I do worry about engine reliability and whether the big-end issue is totally resolved. In UK we have 3y/60k miles warranty; US 100k miles.

I would also be moving from bigger car - I am 6ft 4in tall with 2 boys likely to sprout upwards in the next year or two. This purchase has to satisfy my drive and cope with passengers too!

I will contact you the next time I am in Schwabach/Nuernberg area. Cool story racing that RS4. I have some cool stories also. I have had noting but fun and my car is stock until NOV when I get back from the USA with parts. I should move from 374 at the rear wheels to around 415 I am hoping for at the wheels. Anything over 400 is still awesome. This will be mildly modded. Keep in touch. And have fun with that M3.

  • Thanks so much for putting your site together. An equally 'mad about M3's' friend told me about your site and now every chance i get i visit it in the hope that new stuff has gone up on it. Being in Australia with relatively boring roads and even more boring speed limits (the national speed limit is only 110km/h and is only on the most mundane highways), i love reading about your trips into the mountains to scorch paths thru the amazing scenery and then return home picking on Audis and Porsches on limitless Autobahns. Seriously cool stuff. Definately going to come to visit/live just as soon as finance permits. Thanks for the cool videos and pics, as an 18 year old with a drivers licence for a bit over a year now this kinda stuff is definately things to aspire to. Thanks once again, TIM

  • WOW! Thanks for the great imput on the SMG in the M3. I'm considering the new M5, but it only comes with the SMG, and I wasn't sure if it would be worth it. Like you I've been driving manuals all my life and didn't want to give up the joy of driving a manual. But, with your imput, I'm eager to get behind the wheel of one.

    Thanks,

I need a clutchless car due to a car crash some years ago, so any thoughts on this, and on throttle response, ease of learning the system, would be much appreciated

How did you cut the wing so precisely to fit ailerons ?

How do you achieve 30min flights ?

How do you keeep the model so blemish-free !

  • Came across the site looking for "real world" reviews and opinions of the SMG tranny. With all that i have read, here and elsewhere, i am considering cancelling the 330cic w/smg that i have on order and switchin to the M3 w/smg!...seems to be much more of a usefull and "real" sequential than what comes on the 325/330. Gee, what's another $12K anyways. Keep up the good work.

  • Hi I own a Imola Red 2003 M3 with SMG stock except for a set os BBS RGR 19" with 275/30-19R and 235/35-19F and Bilstein coil over suspension , I have put on about 10000mi on is and am still learning thinghs about the car and the SMG transmision, My cousin has a 2002 Yellow with a 6 speed and based o the numbers from the car magazines his car is supposed to be a little faster in the 1/4 mile and 0-60 times but we wnt to the track here and ran both cars and he did not beat me once I ran a 13.255 @104.16 and he ran a 13.415 @ 104.20 in the 1/4(1320ft) mile, I am not sure if you race 1/4 mile there but this is about 1.5-2 car lenghts difference.
Now at the time we did that I had no clue on how to use the LC so I would time the lights just right and go in to the burnout mode and try not to melt the tires all the way, I have all the info on how to use the LC now thanks to your website and I will try to see if I can make better time next time at the track I will keep you posted, anyway all I wanted to say is that is nice to know that there are dedicated fans of the BMW and M3 that are willing to invest time and money to bring more interest to this fenomenal automobile.
P.S. let me know of any other tricks with the SMG that you have't posted on your website.
    Thanks Alin

I ordered the car with a basic head unit and H/K and quickly replaced the head unit with a few Kenwood components:

    KVT-911DVD head unit.
    KHD-CX910 Music Keg

I recently picked up a KNA-DV 3100 Navigation unit but I'm still looking for the European DVD maps (KNA-MP323) in order to use it.

I've had four porsches in the past. The last was a '78 SC, with no where near the hp the M3 packs. This morning I took it on a 200 mile get aquainted ride on a country road. This car is amazing to say again. It's still in the break in period so she hasn't been over the 5500 rpm range. I can't imagine what thrills is yet to come. Enough already, you know fair well what I'm experiencing. ----------- Don

Maybe we meet one day on the Autobahn! (It becomes extremely difficult to cruise at diligent speeds anywhere in Europe except some parts of Germany. The way things go now Belgium will soon have speedcameras in every street. In France they put you in jail for speeding (even strangers).

  • Great site! I just need to comment on the claims by the recent poster, "480hpRS4 @ hotmail.com": The car Leo raced was indeed an Audi RS4 Avant (available as a station-wagon only), a 2.7 liter BiTurbo V6 with 380 Hp (Audi's claim). The car you are thinking of when you state that it has 450 Hp is probably the Audi RS6 (available both as a sedan and a station-wagon), which has a 4.2 liter BiTurbo V8 with 450 Hp; however, that car weighs a lot more and is actually pretty much equal to the M3 performance-wise (if not even slightly slower, at least in lower speeds, and definitely slower on a circuit!). Both the RS4 and the RS6 are of course relatively easy to tune, and when tuned they are definitely faster than the M3 (well, maybe still not faster on the circuit, but in most "real-life situations"). The Audi RS cars are great, but I still would not consider them over the M cars, just my 2¢...

  • The RS4 article was cute but just one thing before pushing your chest out too far.....you were not racing an RS4. The picture is of an S4 Avant with about 280 HP (2.7 Turbo) that Audi likes to badge as an RS in Europe as a tongue in cheek joke. You were racing a station wagon! (And barely staying ahead?) He probably borrowed the car from his wife and was not used to driving it. The real RS4 is a SEDAN with 450HP and if you would have seen one it would have only have been a glimpse as he blew by you! Take heed from a "40 year old" man that has owned more BMW's than I care to remember and I have worked with BMW and Porsche racing for 18 years. My car of choice, after years of test and research, Audi (at the moment a '03 RS6 - 518hp/530fp torque on the dyno). Sorry, better engineering makes better cars and as a long time Beemer fan (and certified BMW mechanic/SCCA pit crew member from college while workig though an engineering degree) I crossed over and have seen many other BMW drivers do the same. Have fun in your car, it should be a great toy while you save up the $90,000 for a starter Audi and feel the how a true 50/50 awd (Quattro) system holds the road with no "drift". After that you will see the light and and understand the link between Ferrari and Audi shared engineering and why so many have stepped up to the next level of automobile.

  • Great pics of Europe...wish I had my car there ('02 M3)

It would be great if you could profile each of the cars in your pics and show what all the mods are and details on each.

rims - brand, size, width, materials, where purchased
    engine mods, etc.

I really like your new rims as well, very close to BBS RS-GT style, which I like very much. Also BBS RGR are very nice.
What about the Gruppe M intake mod in carbon fibre on Dragi's car? Would love to know how it sounds, and what the performance increase/decrease is!

Nice group of friends you have to be able to travel around in nice cars!

  • Great website Leo! I just ordered an '04 M3 With SMGII and have been worrying that I made a mistake and should have ordered the 6-speed. You answered my questions. Currently own an '02 Porsche Carrera with a 6-speed and love the car. My daily driver is an '03 Corvette C5 with a 6-speed (my 8th Corvette) and although it's a lot of car for the money, it's like driving a school bus compared to the Porsche. Really looking forward to the M3 with SMGII. Hey, I see you're into airplanes. That's how I pay for my toys. What ratings do you hold?
Thanks again for all of the great information on your website!

  • SMG II is the most freaking cool device ever known to mankind, it's just exceptional the way it changes gears and double declutches during downshifts!
I drive a E36 320I but I have seen it in action and the M3 is just to good to be true, especially with the sport mode on, throttle response is razor sharp, nothing beats it, I dont know how quick it is, but it must be 6 times quicker to respond compared to a normal bimmer with a single electronic throttle, 6 individual throttles, 1 for each cylinder= Ultrafast response!

By the way your website is the most informative website i have found about the E46 M3, particularly the SMG II, al the other websites i visited are rubbish!

Keep up the good work and enjoy the finest M car from Bavaria!

  • Hi Leo,

ich hoffe ein deutscher Gästebucheintrag erfreut Dich genauso, wie die der englischsprachigen Leser.

Ersteinmal vorneweg, deine Homepage gefällt mir sehr gut.

In diesem Sinne, keep on rollin'

    Grüsse

  • Great site and information, thank you for putting it together. I look forward to reviewing all your trips. We just returned to the US after European delivery of a Carbon Black/Cinnamon w/SMG II and Nav. We spent two wonderful weeks in Germany and Switzerland with a quick trip to Genoa. We also did BMW's driving school at Nurburgring and also got a few laps in at Hockenheim (out of control, wild). The 1200 mile service was done in Koblenz prior to the ring. The car is incredible and I envy you guys for the opportunity to drive the roads you have.

Keep up the good work, the information on the SMG is really terrific. We hope to return for another week of touring before the car is shipped home.

    Best regards,

  • Hi,
you have created a great site for Beemer lovers. Superb photos, descent writing and a lot of dreams.
I own a E46 M3 with 19 stock rims, air intake, mapping and crankshafts from CSL, rubber Conti 2 with the same dimensions of CSL's and Schnitzer anti roll bars. I am thinking to modifie the suspension with Bilstein PSS9 coil over kit. I have had a look at your article about the trip at Switzerland on 21/9/2002 and especially at Dragi's car that wears the specific set up. I was wondering if you could share your thoughts about the handling and the ride of that car.
    Thanks for all,

  • I can't tell you how much I enjoyed reading all the posts and answers on your site. I recently picked up a 2003 SMG II and am about 300 miles into the break-in period. I am dying to get through the break -in period so I can turn it loose on some winding coastal highways! I am awestruck at how much more power it has than my 2000 328ci. I have a couple of questions:

    1) Does the driving experience become noticably smoother as the break-in period progresses? It already seems to be "finding itself" as far as the clutching, and I hope it continues to mature.

    2) Am I being too tentative during the break-in period? I have not exceeded 5,000 RPM's (as much as want to). Is it really true that I should wait until after 1,200 miles to push it ?

    2) My driver's side door is not completely true. There is about 1/8 to 1/16 of an inch separation between the body and the door (the passenger side is fine.) There is slight cabin noise and the closing sound is not resounding. ave you heard of such a thing? It may just be the strike plate, so I am going to take it in to the dealer (I just hate to let it out of my iste as I have waited for 10 years to get one.

    Thanks again for the site.

  • Hi,

I am a keen lover of BMW's and will always have one on my drive. I am 22years old and find it difficult to find someone sharing my same pasion. It all started when i had a Z3 M Roadster on my 21st Birthday. It was stunning!!!! Estoril Blue!! i loved it and how it drove! since it had no DSC it was quite dangerous in wet weather and thought i must hold my hands up and swap for a safer car. I traded it in and bought a E46 Compact 325TI SE. This is a lovely drive but a miss the power! both engine and woman pulling power!!!!! anyway i have decided to change again!!!! So next week on the 29th i am taking delivery of my very own M3 with SMGII and 19" Alloys, Sat Nav ETC in Carbon Black. I Can't wait to drive it. I had a test drive and it brought back memories of the Roadster. The thing is this new car has the hallowed DSC!!! i'll let you know how i get on!! Great Site and hope you keep uo the love for BMW!!!!!

This has been a problem for me. Also I have found to avoid hesitation on quick pull off you have to keep engine engaged my running a few hundred revs higher than idle. Any comments?? Jeff.

    Thanks alot for the review

It's GREAT! The RS4 race is grat and the pictures are beautiful! I don't own an M3 as it costs about S$355,000.00 for an SMG model in Singapore.

It just feels great to read about people sharing their experience driving an M3, I hope to get into the driver's seat one day.

  • Hi, Leo.

First of all, I have to say WOW!!!! I found your website from your posts on M3Forum and I've very impressed with it. I've been to Switzerland before and it is very beautiful. You certainly captured some of that beauty and wonder in your pics and added to it with your awesome car!!! I own a 1998 M3 and I love it. However, my car certainly cannot compare to your's!!! Great site and great car!!!

Take care and write back if you wish.

    2) can we start as fast as with the manual. (stop and go)??

  • Leo, Your site rocks! Makes me want an M car so bad and to move to Germany. The info on purchasing an M from Germany and driving it for a month before I ship it home is something I may have to do in the future.
And the thought of driving a "REAL" car on the autobahn instead of a rental car makes the hair on the back of my neck standup.

  • hi leo

you've got a quite international audience here so i think i better write in english. first of all: your car history has the same beginning as mine. an e30 bmw. but i think at your youth it was brandnew and something special. now it's old ('88) and the design might not be up to date anymore. but when comparing it to my frends cars (all new stock fords, opels, peugeots...) i never wanna change it! it's great fun to drive. hopefully my car career will continue as yours did. with a m3, which is a very desireable car! of course with absolutely no mods to keep the original character of a bmw.

noch weiterhin viel freude am fahren!

  • Leo,

Fantastic site! I was having trouble deciding on a 6 speed or the SMG, and between Carbon Black and Steel Gray. Then I found your site. Your pics made me decide on the Carbon Black and convinced me to give the SMG a test drive. And what a test drive it was! SMG is definitely the way to go. I've never had so much fun driving a car in my life, and I've driven a lot of nice cars. Your pics are great, they keep me going until I can put mine in my garage. Your car will have an identical twin running around Texas soon. Thanks for the great site.

I really enjoyed your website! You've obviously spent considerable amount of time, thought, and energy in putting it all together. I am purchasing a new 2004 M3 Titanium Silver Cabriolet. I was trying to decide on the SMG II transmission. You convinced me to go ahead and get it. I think it will be terrific. I have selected almost all the other available options and the transmission seems to be very popular by those that have actually driven it. Have you had any problems since purchasing your car? I will be moving to Italy next year so I may have the chance to experience the M3 on the German Autobahn! Thanks for the help!

It wasn't until I read your articles on your web page that I got so hyped up and excited about the car. I previously owned a '95 M3. Today, as I left the BMW Dealer and started my drive home on hwy. 80, I had no idea of how truely the M3 would live up to the legacy of the "ULTIMATE" Driving Machine!! Thanks, again.

  • Hi Leo,
Thanks for your "real life" review from a life long stick man.
I too have had sticks all my life and my first BMW was a 1979. I ordered an SMG M3 with some trepidation, being a life long stick man myself. It's just that I have chronic back flareups, and there were times my 2002 M3 would be very painful to shift.
After your comments, I can now breathe a little easier and look forward to my 2003 SMGM3...

  • Hallo,

Alles in Allem recht schwer.

Vielleicht hast Du noch ein paar Anregungen was den ECO angeht ?

    Gruß

  • Leo,

Excellent site, especially all the info on the SMG II. I have a '02 E46 w/SMG II. Went through most of the SMG Q&As and couldn't find an answer to this:

When I want to downshift the transmission, the car "engine compression downshifts" (i.e no rev matching) when I am coming off the throttle (i.e. deaccelerating) as opposed to double clutch downshifting and rev mathcing. To get it to double clutch downshift and rev match while deaccelerating I have to be either neutral throttle, or better yet, positive throttle. So to rev match on the downshifts while deaccelerating it's a brake, postive throttle, downshift, brake, positive throttle, downshift, etc . . . sequence.

Is this normal? Should the car not double clutch downshift and rev match every downshift regardless of the throttle position?

    Thanks
    Brad

  • Read a lot about your SMG II...I have a jet black M3 w/SMG II. I've learned that (at least in mine) you can have a quick start doing the North American launch OR you can press the gas all the way to the floor while in launch, let off real fast and do the same (holding shifter forward for both pumps) for a similar German launch. It still only goes up to 1300rpms, but it makes a huge difference! I need to play with it more, but when that is done, it almost takes off too hard and spins the wheels too much. Thought follow owners in the lowlands of 1300 rpm launchs would appreciate this.

Thanks for the great pics and videos...I often thought something was wrong with my exhaust until I heard your video.

Also, I just got back from Germany (Munich) and drove up to Amsterdam (in a rental)...I am so jealous you get to drive yours on the Autobahn!!!

  • Hi Leo,

  • Hi Leo,
Just read your comment about the encounter with an RS4 and this is similar to my meeting with one yesterday. I have to add that I only have my new M3 since last Tuesday and only had about 1500 KM on it. Obviously I did go over the 5500rpm but never to redline. I drove up the "Oberalp Pass" in Graubünden yesterday morning with my roof down and a RS4 pulled out of a gas station in front of me. Of course I followed him and he pretty much went for it. Down in the valley I used him as my Radar detector...
When the road started to climb we really moved. Plenty of traffic, so we had lots of good obstacles to play with. I was always able to stay right on his tail. I would not have been able to overtake him but I could follow him on every passing maneuver or acceleration and he did squeeze what he had out of his RS4. I am convinced that the SMG also helped on such a road.

On top he pulled over and I went right next to him. He asked me right away whether everything was "standard" on my car? I told him "Yes, and it's not even broken in yet...". He then went on that his RS4 had everything on it that you can add; i.e. Chip, intake etc. etc. and that normally gets the RS4 to about 420-440 horses. He was very amazed that he could not outrun my M3 and he blamed his car for being heavier and for that he also had a passenger. I said bye with the biggest grin on my face and left them.

It was obviously the nicest encounter so far and it made me feel very good and even more convinced that I bought the right car. Just thought I add that to your comments on meeting up with an RS4.

    Tschüss
    Peter

Just a quick question regrading the SMG II gearbox.....

If I was travelling at 100kmh (in 6th gear) and I slowed down to say 60kmh and then accelerate again........without downshifting, would the SMG 2 gearbox automatically downshift to say 2nd/3rd gear or would it stay in 6th gear until I physically downshift????.

  • I have had my Titaium Silver/Black M3 since April 15th and I can't describe how much fun it is to drive. I want to thank you again for all the information you post on this site Leo. I found out more about my car than my dealer could tell me by reading everything on your site.

Has anyone taken replaced/taken off the the resonator box in the exaust that makes that funny rattling sound? I am very curious about this.

I was put off by the exhaust sound at first, but I can tell you that there is no car exhaust on the road today that has such a unique sound - I am leaning toward changing mine out for the Eisenmann however.

Keep up the great posts Leo - and let us know if you find any mechanical issues as you drive your car in the future.

I got my Tita./Imola coupe w/SMG two weeks ago and have been having a great time with the car but an equally great time connecting to other owners across the globe. I think Porsche owners have gotten to full of themselves and have forgotten about the joy of driving. Your site is fun and quite informative for new to SMG drivers. Keep it going please.

  • Hi, Got my carbon black convertible in April.
The SMG II is amazing, but has anyone got any info on how many times you can use mode 6 (accellerator assist)before you get any problems with parts, I've heard stories about using it 4 times and then 30!!! Apparently over use can damage the clutch plate or drive shaft to name but a few? I've used it abour 6 or 7 times.

    ? Any info greatly appreciated.

    P.S The 19in Wheels are a must!

Seven days later, I've driven it only 120 kms. (dont want to drive it in the rain) Thanks for all the info.

  • Hi Leo-

I have been reading your posts regarding SMG back to when we were all waiting for Andreas to get his car...I LOVED your review back then, and, with my '02 M3 on order for June '02 build (with SMG!), I am going back and reviewing all the SMG articles that I can find! It helps pass the time while waiting...!
I, like yourself, have "grown up" on 'sticks, and have been driving one for over 20 years, so making the M3 purchase with the 6 spd vs. the SMG has been an AGONIZING choice. I don't want to have regrets later after getting my M3, and have decided to go ahead with SMG.

Thanks again for all of your informative posts...

  • Great site...picked up my SMGII M3 cab a couple of weeks ago. Although we did a test drive..we were apprehensive since we have had only manual BMWs and 911s. This was the first or second SMGII delivered by this dealer -- and they couldn't answer many questions about it. In fact, I saw the service guy rolling it into the bay because he couldn't start it! The site has helped so much. Thanks for all your work!!

  • I ordered an M3 last year but had to let it go as it was too long a wait for whne I had to have a car. I now have one on order again with delivery estimated for Dec 02. I also filled in the " interest sheet for the CSL" with my dealer as I would prefer one of these if it comes out in 2003 in the UK and is not more then 43K pds.
DO you have any idea what the spec will be for the CSL in Germany and when it will be on sale? I did wonder about ordering my M3 from Germany and was interested to know if the price is less, as I would expect. Any idea on lead time for Uk spec car?
I didn't decide yet on the SMG II or manual, just carbon and cinammon int.

The photos of your new car with the German countryside in the background reminds me of the Marin County countryside north of the Golden Gate Bridge where I look forward to stretching my new car's legs this summer!

I anticipate reading your thoughts and impressions about your new M3 when you have the inclination to post them on your website.

Es scheint so, daß wir sehr ähnliche Autos haben. Mein M3 (EZ am

Was ist denn mit Deinem Auto los? Hier im Gästebuch steht, daß

  • My M3, also with SMG transmission and 19" wheels is being delivered on or about April 8 (It hits the port in S.C.on the 1st and takes about a week to 10 days to be delivered to the dealer). I did NOT have to wait at all... I called on 3/23 and was told that one would be available in 3 weeks. Naturally, I said I want it. Mine will be black on black, which is not my first choice... but it was that or wait for the next. I've had some reservations about the 19" wheels and would appreciate anyone giving me some feedback. In Florida, the roads are like glass, so this should work in favor. From the pics on this site (Great site by the way), the wheels look great. I can't wait. Currently own a Z28, so I like power and speed. The M3 should deliver this in abundance. :cool

  • I went to my local BMW dealer on 3/22/02 with the intention of having one of the techs help me diagnose the location of a rattle in my 2001 silver/red M3 6 speed. While there I had a chance to drive a brand new 2002 M3 w/ SMG II. As it turns out the individual who had ordered the car was not able to take delivery. He had called to decline delivery 2 hours earlier. Shortly after my test drive in the SMG II, I negotiated a trade. I only have 200 miles on it, but I can tell you that it is much quicker than my cab, and the SMG II is truely the best way to exploit the cars tremendous power. The SMG II is very intuitive to drive. I can't wait to get to know the car! The gear changes are lightening quick, much quicker than I am able to negotiate. Cornering is an absolute blast as you are able to concentrate on your driving and not worry about being thrown around as you enter the corner at speed. The SMG II will double clutch as you enter the corner and rocket out of the apex. Accomplishing this is far easier than if you were in a 6 speed. There seems to be a slight hesitation at take off, but I was never keen on dumpping the clutch to maximize acceleration anyway. The car rockets starting at around 2000 rpms. - happy trails

Carbon black, black interior, xenon, harmon cardon, US cold weather package and US premium. standard 6 speed and stock 18 wheels. It's past 5000 km and ready to go. I went against the SMGII based on inability to drive one, no launch control inthe US and I think I'ld miss the clutch too much.

  • leo or andreas(im not sure whos it is) i love your m3!! i love the wheels you put on it and the exhaust sounds excellent! i appreciate the different things you put on your website to help BMW enthusiasts see and hear what you do i.e., the two audio files of the exhaust. i was surprised to see how great the new exhaust sounded, especially when compared to the stock m3 exhaust. i hate to say it, but your exhaust actually makes the stock exhaust sound bad! i did notice in both, however, a chainsaw-like sound. i read on your website months ago that you were planning on doing something to rectify that minor detail. are you still going to? if so, be sure to explain what you did on your website. and you HAVE to have a third audio file to let us hear what it would sound like then. well thats all i have to say for now. one more question: would you mind when i get my m3(since we live in different countries) if i put those same wheels and exhaust on it? dont worry, ill get a different exterior/interior color! let me know.

Do you have the plans/instructions and decals for it? If you do, I would very much like a copy in order to clone one. I don't think you would want to sell your unopened kit, so the plans will have to do.
I also have a BMW, but it is a 1978 R100RT motorcycle with only 15k miles on it. I bought it 2 years ago with less than 11k miles. It is Candy-apple red with black Corbin seat and black frame with the original "snowflake" wheels. I love to ride it.

  • I took delivery of my M3 with SMG on 1/21/02. It's a lot of fun, especially with the sport button on, but I still miss the involvement of shifting the manual transmission. I miss the feedback through the shift lever as well as the clutch pedal and have already ordered a six-speed and will be selling my SMG car. Don't get me wrong, it works great and I may regret it, but I just didn't feel satisfied when I finished going for a drive through the mountains. Keep up the great articles!

Leo, thanks for putting up a such a great site. It was a big influence in my decision to go with the smg. Can't wait for the 1200mi "break-in" period to be over with so I can really see what it can do.

your page, I became very excited to order my own M3 with
SMG. However, after reading the m3 message board in the
USA, I became very concerned about the quality of the car.
I am also surprised at how BMW would release the M3 in
production with so much inherent problems. If there is
indeed production problems on M3, I just wish that BMW
accepts responsibility and remedy the problem openly.

  • Hi Leo, Me again . Thought I'll let you know that I was on the Münich BMW factory tour last Monday (12th Nov.). OK, I guess it will not be as great as visiting the Regensburg's factory tour where the M3 is put together but nevertheless, it was pretty impressive . I was very lucky to get onto the tour as typically you are advised to booked two months in advance but I got onto the tour with two weeks notice . You probably already know, BMW only build 3 serie Saloons and Compacts there, approx. 750 units a day but what impress me most was that each car in the factoy line was different and actually belonged to a customer (or dealer) . We were told that the M3 engine was build there and is delivery to the Regensburg factory for installation into the body. Anyway, couldn't see my engine or yours so I guess we still have some time to wait . I saw quite a few cars being picked up so I wonder if you know whether we can do that also from Regensburg. Certainly it will probably save us the 1.200DM delivery costs .

    Catch you later .

    Pete.

P.S. The factory tour is free and BMW actually give you a free drink !

Just wanted to thank you & Andreas for the excellent review of the E46 M3 w/ SMGII. I placed my order on Sep/10 after reading your comments. Guess the color ...Steel Grey w/ Imola Red interior & Titan trim .

Your personal comments were more convincing than any advertising material that SMGII was the way to go.

I'm looking forward to delivery sometime in mid-2002.

  • Searched for information on the SMG II and found your site. Site is very informative and the use of video and sound certainly provide your readers with a lot more information than words can . I currently drive the E36 M3 ( British Racing Green ) which is my first M car ( previous car was a E36 318i ) and I still find its preformance awesome. Although I love this car, I will trade it in for the E46 BMW M3 April next year ( order was made March 2001 ). My order is similar to yours metallic carbon black, titan trim and black leather seats. I've gone for approx 20.000 DM worth of options (navg system with TV, sunroof, Harmon speakers, CD changer etc) but did not go for the SMG II as I thought it would reduce the performance of the car ! But, from your site and Andreas's input, I pretty convinced now to take the SMG II option subject to my dealer giving me a test drive . So thanks very much and keep up the good work .

  • Hey Man Wassup, I just want to leave a comment about your site. It's great site and very informative. The soundbites was very cool also. Hearing the M3 change gears is like music to my ears. I myself is considering to buy an M3. Before I couldn't seem to decide what color I wanted. I was favoring the Laguna Seca blue but its seems to be getting mixed reviews. Once I saw the Carbon black M3, I totally made up my mind. Looking at your Black M3 really help me push towards that color. Not only does it look bold and elegant but it also has that racey edgey look. One last thing, your leather seats...did you pick the color blue or is that the color that the nappa leather come in when you select the premium package? i have been on the bmw website creating my future M3 and that color was not available. Well I'm off surfing the web for more pics of the carbon black M3. Keep up the good work on your webpage man. I'll most likely go back to it to admire your M3 even more.

    Best regards,
    R. Jarin

  • Just really antious to here what you have to say about the US spec SMG II with only S1-5 and not the "extreme" S6 mode. Will I know the difference. They still say it will change gears in .008 of a second or 8 milliseconds. Also do you think the SMG II shaves any more time off of the already sick 4.65 sec to 60mph!

Sorry, just really interested in your responce. Your the only person besides Andreas that has first hand experience I can ask.

  • Hey Lordy,

You and Andreas did a great job putting together information for allof around the world wondering what the SMG II really looks, sounds and performs like. I down loaded all three video clips. (NICE!!)

Where my question lies is with the modes S1-6. Unfortunantly BMW of North America takes its pride in thinking for us here in the US when it comes to high performance cars like the M3 SMG II.

Getting to the point the have decided not to allow the S6 mode in the US. They say from a serviceability standpoint that we AMERICANS will be happier without it than with it! HMMM!!

Please tell me that S5 mode is still .008 in gear changes. The call the S6 mode the launch mode here. Its only for race type standing starts?

Will I been happies with the S5 and will it still perform the same. How different were the S5 & S6 mode. Please see if you can elaborate on this for me, my PO OREDER is for 11/1/01 for delivery in January. I'm starting to revert back to the Manual Trans. HELP

  • Saw your post about the tradgedy on the M3 forum today and wish to thank you for your sympathy. Several on the board are New Yorkers and they seem safe, for which I give thanks. Don't worry about the United States. WE will endure. A striking picture: Across from one the TV stations in New York a construction site. On a fence shielding the site from the sidewalk construction workers had hung two big hand lettered signs. They said: "pray for the victims and their families" and "God Bless America" That about says it all.

PS. It is funny how taste changes. Until about two years ago I thought (secretly I still do) that one of the most beautiful cars ever produced was Citroen DS 21 especially in Pallas edition. I think though, that instead of saving for restoration of one I will spend the money on brand new M3. More pleasure from driving I'd say.

I appreciate your comments about next M3 (even if cannot afford it) but would like to know your opinion about his : I have read that the rear suspension is to stiff and not comfortable enough, even if this is a "sport" car, and, for instance, the new M5 spring and shocks absorbers are "perfect", much more comfortable than the M3 ones.

Thank you for the excellent description of your extended M3 test drive. I was nervous when ordering my 2001 M3 because I never had the opportunity to drive the car before I placed my order. I do not expect to receive my car until at least September 2001 because BMW has been very slow to deliver any M3's to the USA. I sold my Porsche Carrera-4 last November so I will have to wait almost a year until my M3 arrives. I hope it is worth the wait!
